Slovenia-Morocco Shared Vision & Strengthening Strategic Ties

Slovenia has recently lauded Morocco’s distinguished role as a strategic partner of the European Union (EU), reflecting a growing recognition of the Kingdom’s pivotal position in fostering regional stability and cooperation. This commendation was highlighted during an official visit by Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon, to Morocco, marking the 32nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

In a joint communiqué issued after talks between Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and Tanja Fajon, both countries underscored the centrality of the historic and privileged partnership between Morocco and the EU. They emphasized the importance of this strategic relationship, not just for the two nations but for the broader Euro-African region. The communiqué stressed the commitment of both nations to bolster cooperation, dialogue, and partnership within the Euro-African region and between the EU and its southern neighborhood, addressing common challenges in security, stability, migration, and socio-economic development.

The discussions also touched on regional issues, with both sides exchanging views on topics of mutual interest and new challenges to peace and security in the Sahel region. They acknowledged their constructive roles in maintaining stability and peace in their respective regions, and Slovenia specifically recognized Morocco’s significant contributions to promoting security, combating terrorism, and managing cross-border migration.

In a significant endorsement, Slovenia commended Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Moroccan Sahara as “a good basis for reaching a final and consensual solution” to the regional dispute, under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy. This position aligns Slovenia with a growing international consensus that views Morocco’s efforts as serious, credible, and aimed at achieving a realistic and mutually acceptable political solution. Slovenia’s support is a testament to Morocco’s efforts and adds to the support from over a hundred UN member countries.

Furthermore, both nations expressed their commitment to international legality and the peaceful settlement of conflicts and disputes. They discussed possibilities for closer cooperation in internal security and law enforcement, particularly in fighting organized crime, cyber crime, money laundering, and terrorism. Bourita congratulated Fajon on Slovenia’s membership in the UN Security Council for 2024-2025 and appreciated Slovenia’s inclusive approach to its mandate, prioritizing international peace and security.

The ministers also encouraged academic cooperation, promoting partnerships between the Piran-based EMUNI Euro-Mediterranean University and the Euromed University of Fez. This collaboration aims to create opportunities for empowering young people in the Euro-Mediterranean region through science, research, innovation, and the blue economy.

Slovenia’s official visit to Morocco underscores the deepening ties between the two countries, marked by a shared vision for a stable and prosperous Euro-African region. As strategic partners, Slovenia and Morocco are set to continue their collaboration within international organizations, reinforcing their commitment to addressing global challenges and promoting peace and security.
