Israel orders more evacuations in Gaza after rocket fire from militants

The Israeli military ordered further evacuations in northwest Gaza after Palestinian militants fired rockets toward the Israeli town of Ashkelon. The attack triggered air raid sirens, with one rocket intercepted and another falling into the sea. This follows earlier evacuations in northern Gaza after the war began on Oct. 7. Around 90% of Gaza’s population has been displaced, with many living in overcrowded tent camps. In Syria, the death toll from Israeli airstrikes rose to 14, with 43 others wounded. The strikes targeted areas in central Syria, including a highway and sites linked to Iranian militias. Israel has not commented on the operation but has frequently carried out strikes in Syria to prevent Iranian military entrenchment.

The Israeli military has issued evacuation orders for additional residential areas in northwest Gaza following rocket fire aimed at the nearby Israeli town of Ashkelon. The new evacuations were announced Monday, a day after air raid sirens sounded in Ashkelon due to a rocket attack. The military reported intercepting one rocket, while another landed in the sea.

Earlier in the war, triggered by Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, Israel had ordered the evacuation of northern Gaza, including Gaza City, the largest urban center. While many residents fled south, around 300,000 remained in the north, an area now surrounded by Israeli forces and suffering widespread destruction. The north has been largely cut off since October.

In the nearly year-long conflict, about 90% of Gaza’s population—around 2.3 million people—has been displaced, with many forced to move multiple times. Hundreds of thousands are now living in overcrowded tent camps along the coast, with minimal public services.

Latest Developments: The death toll from Israeli airstrikes in Syria has risen to 14, according to Syrian state media. The strikes, which occurred overnight, targeted several areas in central Syria, including a highway in Hama province. Fires were ignited, and the initial report from Masyaf National Hospital indicated four deaths. By Monday morning, the number of fatalities had climbed to 14, with 43 wounded.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in the U.K., said one of the targets was a scientific research center in Maysaf, where Iranian militias and experts are reportedly developing weapons. Local media also reported strikes around Tartous. Israel, which has conducted numerous strikes in Syria in recent years, did not immediately comment on the operation. The country has vowed to prevent Iranian military entrenchment in Syria.
