Jill Biden Hits Campaign Trail, Rallies for Kamala Harris in Key States

Deep Look

First Lady Jill Biden returned to the campaign trail this week, lending her support to Vice President Kamala Harris in a five-day tour of battleground states. No longer campaigning for her husband, President Joe Biden, who stepped down from the race in July, she is now dedicated to supporting Harris, who received Biden’s endorsement. Starting in suburban Detroit, Jill Biden spoke to supporters with the aim of energizing voters and contrasting Harris’s vision with that of Republican candidate Donald Trump.

In Clawson, Michigan, Jill Biden didn’t miss the opportunity to counter recent criticisms Trump made about Detroit. She praised the city as “vibrant” and “thriving” after Trump recently called it “a mess” while campaigning in the area. Her message at a local restaurant resonated with the 150 supporters gathered, underscoring the importance of Michigan in the upcoming election and the ongoing battle for the Midwest.

Promoting Harris’s Platform and Bonding on Shared Experiences

Throughout her speeches, Jill Biden focused on building up Harris’s background and values, sharing personal stories of how the two bonded over common life experiences. “One thing we share is how we both lost our mothers to cancer,” Biden shared, connecting Harris’s past with her vision for the future. She also spoke about Harris’s early years advocating for friends and fighting for justice as both a district attorney and California’s attorney general.

On the policy side, Biden spotlighted Harris’s plans to curb grocery and housing costs by targeting corporate greed. Additionally, she promoted Harris’s proposal to provide $25,000 in down-payment assistance for first-time homebuyers. Turning to reproductive rights, Biden reminded supporters that Harris has led the administration’s work on abortion rights, recalling how she felt “stunned” and “devastated” when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.

“No one has to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree that the government shouldn’t be telling women what to do,” Biden said, voicing Harris’s commitment to signing a law that would restore abortion rights nationally.

Swing State Blitz and Mobilizing Volunteers

Jill Biden’s campaign trail took advantage of a break in her teaching schedule at Northern Virginia Community College, where she teaches English. The five-day blitz took her through Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, key battleground states where she met with campaign volunteers, delivered speeches, and even brought cookies to supporters as a gesture of thanks.

Ending her tour in Pennsylvania, Biden spoke with volunteers making calls for Harris in West Chester, a suburb of Philadelphia, and joined an event at Montgomery County Community College. She emphasized the importance of early voting, noting that “this election is going to be so close, every vote counts,” before making some phone calls herself to encourage turnout.

Criticizing Trump and Highlighting the Stakes

Biden didn’t shy away from addressing Donald Trump directly. In Madison, Wisconsin, she prompted groans from her audience at the mention of Trump’s name. Biden pointed out that Trump’s focus is only on “himself,” predicting that a second Trump term would bring “more chaos, more greed, more division.”

“The next president will likely choose new Supreme Court justices,” she noted, underlining how crucial the decision will be for future generations. She went on to describe Trump’s tax policies as favoring the wealthy at the expense of average Americans.

Preparing for Future Campaigning

Jill Biden is expected to campaign further for Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, as Election Day approaches. Her efforts serve to rally Democrats, spotlight Harris’s record and policies, and bolster confidence in Harris’s leadership. The first lady’s final campaign event of the tour took place in Philadelphia, where she met President Biden, who expressed his own support for Harris, telling supporters at a Democratic dinner, “Kamala Harris has been a great vice president. She’ll be a great president as well.”
