Deep Look

The much-hyped clash between Jake Paul, the YouTuber-turned-boxer, and boxing legend Mike Tyson ended in an eight-round unanimous decision for Paul, but the fight left fans at AT&T Stadium wanting more. Despite a record-setting gate and the involvement of major streaming platform Netflix, the lackluster action overshadowed the spectacle.

The Fight: Missed Hits and Muted Action

From the opening bell, Tyson, 58, came out aggressively, landing a couple of early punches. However, his pace quickly slowed, and he spent much of the fight sitting back and letting Paul take the initiative.

Paul, 27, displayed more aggression but struggled with accuracy, often missing with wild swings. Despite the lack of significant exchanges, the judges scored the fight overwhelmingly in Paul’s favor.

  • Scorecards: One judge scored it 80-72, while the other two marked it 79-73 in favor of Paul.
  • Fan Reaction: Boos echoed through the stadium as fans expressed their disappointment in the fight’s lack of intensity.

Paul admitted to holding back as the fight progressed, believing Tyson was fatigued.

“I wanted to give the fans a show, but I didn’t want to hurt somebody that didn’t need to be hurt,” Paul said.

Tyson’s Perspective

In his first professional bout since 2005, Tyson said he was content with his performance.

“I didn’t prove nothing to anybody, only to myself,” Tyson remarked post-fight. “I’m just happy with what I can do.”

Tyson, whose record now stands at 50-7 with 44 knockouts, previously fought in an entertaining 2020 exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. The fight against Paul, however, lacked the same energy.

Pre-Fight Drama and Celebrity Buzz

The event, delayed from July due to Tyson’s treatment for a stomach ulcer, was accompanied by pre-fight theatrics, including a slap from Tyson to Paul at the weigh-in. However, the animosity appeared to dissipate during the fight.

Paul paid tribute to Tyson after the match, bowing to him and calling him “the greatest to ever do it.”

“That violence, war thing between us … kind of went away as the rounds went on,” Paul added.

The event drew several celebrities, including Shaquille O’Neal, Rob Gronkowski, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Boxing legends Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis also made appearances, greeting Tyson before the fight.

Record-Breaking Gate and Netflix Streaming Issues

The fight generated nearly $18 million in ticket sales, setting a Texas combat sports gate record. Streaming giant Netflix hosted its first live combat sports event, but the demand caused technical issues, frustrating viewers.

“Over 120 million people on Netflix. We crashed the site,” Paul said.

Undercard Highlights

The co-main event between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano delivered more action, with Taylor retaining her undisputed super lightweight championship in another close decision.

Mario Barrios, meanwhile, retained the WBC welterweight title in a draw with Abel Ramos. Both fighters exchanged knockdowns in a closely contested bout, marking Barrios’ first fight since being appointed WBC welterweight champion.
