Deep Look

The San Francisco 49ers hit a new low Sunday, suffering a 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers in a game riddled with mistakes and missed opportunities. The blowout marked the franchise’s worst defeat to the Packers and exposed glaring issues as the team struggles to maintain playoff hopes in a competitive NFC.

A Record Loss

The loss was the 49ers’ largest in their rivalry with Green Bay, surpassing a 27-point defeat in 1960. It was also the team’s third-largest defeat under head coach Kyle Shanahan and their worst road loss since 2018.

This is probably one of the worst ones I’ve been a part of,” linebacker Fred Warner said. “It’s embarrassing.”

Key Absences Amplify Issues

San Francisco entered the game without several key players, including quarterback Brock Purdy (shoulder), defensive end Nick Bosa (oblique), and left tackle Trent Williams (ankle). Despite their absences, head coach Kyle Shanahan pointed to preventable errors as the main culprits for the defeat.

The Game-Changing Moment

The game unraveled in the third quarter when a pass from backup quarterback Brandon Allen slipped through Deebo Samuel’s hands and into those of Packers safety Xavier McKinney. McKinney returned the interception 48 yards, setting up a Green Bay touchdown three plays later.

Instead of closing the gap to three points, the 49ers fell behind by 17, effectively sealing their fate.

Allen’s Performance

Making his first start since 2021, Brandon Allen finished 17-of-29 for 199 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. While Allen showed moments of promise, tight end George Kittle acknowledged the team’s failures around him.

“Catch everything thrown to us, don’t have penalties, and don’t turn the ball over,” Kittle said. “We didn’t do any of those things, and it put [Allen] at a disadvantage.”

Shanahan’s Frustration

After the game, Shanahan vented his disappointment, summarizing the team’s failure succinctly:

“The whole game was disappointing… That’s how you get embarrassed.”

Looking Ahead

Despite falling to 5-6 and sitting under .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2018, the 49ers remain just one game out of first place in the NFC West. However, with a tough road game against the Buffalo Bills looming, the team faces an uphill battle.

The 49ers hope Brock Purdy can return under center next week. Shanahan remained noncommittal, saying the decision will depend on Purdy’s progress in practice early in the week.

Players Urge Accountability

San Francisco players emphasized the need to regroup quickly.

“We’ve got to take it on the chin, learn from it, and get back to work,” Warner said.

“We share a bad feeling right now,” guard Dominick Puni added. “But it’s a big game next week. We’ve got to go.”
