Deep Look

In a story of survival and companionship, a Ukrainian man and his kitten were rescued from a deadly situation in the Carpathian Mountains. Vladislav Duda, a 28-year-old journalist fleeing war-torn Ukraine to avoid military conscription, became stranded in a 400-meter (437-yard) deep ravine in Romania’s northern Maramures region. His perilous journey through the freezing wilderness could have ended in tragedy, but a rescue operation brought hope and safety to him and his feline companion, Peach.

Duda fled his home in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, a city devastated by the ongoing war with Russia, seeking refuge in neighboring Romania. The path to freedom was fraught with danger, requiring him to traverse the unforgiving Carpathian Mountain range. Amid subzero temperatures and a fierce blizzard, Duda and Peach ran out of food four days before their rescue. The pair relied on melted snow for sustenance while enduring the harsh elements.

When rescuers reached them, Duda was severely hypothermic, “soaked and frozen,” according to Dan Benga, director of the Maramures mountain rescue service. Yet his focus remained on Peach, who was tucked inside his jacket, offering warmth and companionship. Benga described the scene: “The cat was warm and was warming him … so he saved his life. The only thing he cared about was the cat. He doesn’t care about himself.”

The Rescue Mission

The operation to save Duda and Peach was nothing short of extraordinary. A helicopter was initially dispatched to locate them but had to abandon the mission due to poor visibility caused by the blizzard. Rescuers then embarked on foot, navigating deep snow, treacherous terrain, and temperatures plunging to minus 10°C (14°F).

Reaching the stranded pair was only half the challenge. The ascent out of the 400-meter ravine required meticulous effort, with rescuers working tirelessly for over five hours. Throughout the ordeal, Duda refused to let go of Peach, clutching the kitten tightly against his chest. “From the bottom to the top … until we put him in the ambulance,” Benga said, describing Duda’s dedication.

Once out of the ravine, Duda expressed profound gratitude. “The happiest moment is because the cat is here with me,” he told rescuers, crediting Peach for keeping his spirit alive.

Peach: A Source of Hope

Peach, named after the Ukrainian word for “peach,” was not just a companion but a lifeline. The kitten provided warmth against the freezing temperatures and emotional resilience in a time of despair. Although malnourished and weak from the journey, Peach’s condition stabilized after receiving veterinary care in the city of Baia Mare.

Duda also received medical attention for severe hypothermia and near-frostbite. Doctors administered anti-inflammatory treatments and therapies to improve his blood circulation. Both Duda and Peach are expected to make full recoveries, with their survival symbolizing hope in the face of insurmountable odds.

A Growing Crisis

Duda’s story highlights the growing number of Ukrainian men risking their lives to escape military conscription. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, more than 160 Ukrainian men have been rescued from the Maramures region alone, with the numbers increasing each year. Tragically, at least 16 have been found dead in the rugged mountain terrain.

According to Benga, most escapees avoid seeking help until their situation becomes dire. “The people who are calling for help are in the last few hours of their life,” he explained, underscoring the deadly risks many take to evade conscription.

Ukraine has broadened its conscription laws to address manpower shortages in its ongoing conflict with Russia. In April, the Ukrainian parliament lowered the draft-eligible age from 27 to 25, and international allies, including the United States, have encouraged the country to expand its recruitment efforts further. However, desertion and resistance to conscription remain significant issues as men like Duda seek alternatives to fighting in a war they feel is not their own.

A Refugee’s Perspective

Reflecting on his ordeal, Duda spoke about the fear and uncertainty that defined his journey. “It’s like a dream, after all I have been through, I only hoped to be found and to survive,” he said. Peach, he added, was his source of strength, keeping his heart warm and his hope alive.

Duda’s bond with Peach reveals the enduring human need for connection and companionship, even in the direst circumstances. While his story ends with rescue and recovery, it also sheds light on the countless others facing similar risks in search of safety and freedom.

For Duda and Peach, their survival is not just a testament to their resilience but also a reminder of the power of hope, love, and determination in the face of overwhelming challenges.
