Deep Look

Kim Calls U.S.-Japan-South Korea Alliance a Threat

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has once again vowed to expand his country’s nuclear arsenal, warning that the growing military partnership between the United States, South Korea, and Japan poses a serious threat to his regime.

Speaking on Saturday at an event marking the 77th anniversary of the Korean People’s Army, Kim accused Washington of orchestrating a “NATO-style military bloc” in the region, creating a dangerous military imbalance on the Korean Peninsula.

According to North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim stated that North Korea would rapidly enhance all deterrence, including nuclear forces, and reaffirmed his “unshakable policy” of nuclear expansion.

Trump’s Outreach to Kim: A Diplomatic Dead End?

Since taking office on January 20, President Donald Trump has hinted at reopening diplomatic channels with Kim, boasting about his previous meetings with the North Korean leader during his first term in 2018-19.

During a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday, Trump stated:

“We will have relations with North Korea, with Kim Jong Un. I got along with him very well, as you know. I think I stopped the war.”

In a Fox News interview aired on January 23, Trump also referred to Kim as “a smart guy” and “not a religious zealot”, confirming that he plans to reach out again.

However, North Korea has not officially responded to Trump’s remarks, and Kim’s latest speech suggests he remains uninterested in reviving diplomacy at this time.

Failed Diplomacy and Ongoing Hostilities

Trump and Kim met three times in 2018-19, marking the first-ever summits between U.S. and North Korean leaders. These historic talks aimed at denuclearization, but ultimately failed after Trump rejected Kim’s offer to dismantle his main nuclear complex in exchange for broad sanctions relief.

Since then, diplomacy has stalled, and North Korea has intensified its weapons testing while the U.S. and South Korea expanded their joint military drills, including trilateral exercises involving Japan.

North Korea has condemned these drills, calling them preparations for an invasion.

Kim’s Growing Alignment with Russia

Beyond his tensions with Washington, Kim Jong Un has been strengthening ties with Russia, openly backing Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

In his Saturday speech, Kim reaffirmed support for Russia, stating that North Korea “will invariably support and encourage the just cause of the Russian army and people to defend their sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.”

Kim also blamed the United States for fueling the Ukraine conflict, accusing Washington of stirring up war through its military alliances.

Many analysts believe that Kim’s close partnership with Russia may reduce his immediate interest in returning to talks with the U.S.. However, some experts speculate that if Kim’s alliance with Russia weakens after the war, he may reconsider engaging with Trump in the future.

Concerns Over Trump’s North Korea Strategy

With Trump expressing renewed interest in diplomacy with Pyongyang, some South Korean officials have voiced concerns that he could abandon efforts for complete denuclearization in favor of a political deal.

However, a joint U.S.-Japan statement released after Trump’s meeting with Prime Minister Ishiba reaffirmed a commitment to the “complete denuclearization” of North Korea. The statement also emphasized the importance of continued trilateral cooperation between the U.S., Japan, and South Korea in countering North Korea’s nuclear threats.

What’s Next?

  • Kim Jong Un is unlikely to engage in diplomacy soon, as he focuses on military expansion and his partnership with Russia.
  • Trump may attempt to restart talks, but his previous failures with Kim raise doubts about success.
  • The U.S., South Korea, and Japan will likely continue strengthening their security alliance, leading to further tensions with Pyongyang.
  • If North Korea’s ties with Russia weaken, Kim could reconsider diplomacy, but only on his terms.

As North Korea continues to test weapons and strengthen its nuclear program, tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain high, with no immediate path toward diplomatic resolution.
