Trump Goes After Fox News Over Economic Poll Showing Public Discontent
Deep Looks
April 24, 2025– President Donald Trump lashed out Thursday at Fox News and its parent company after the network aired polling results showing widespread public dissatisfaction with his economic policies.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump accused Rupert Murdoch of harboring anti-Trump bias and attacked both Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, calling the latter “China Loving” and declaring: “It sucks!!!”
“This ‘pollster’ has gotten me, and MAGA, wrong for years,” Trump wrote. “Murdoch has told me for years that he is going to get rid of his FoxNews, Trump Hating, Fake Pollster, but he has never done so.”
The Fox News Poll That Sparked the Outburst
The latest Fox News poll, released Wednesday, painted a grim picture of Trump’s standing with American voters just ahead of the 100-day mark of his second term:
- Inflation: Only 33% approve, while 59% disapprove.
- Inflation: 82% are extremely or very concerned about inflation.
- Tariffs: 33% approve; 58% disapprove.
- Overall Economic Handling: 38% approval, a new low.
- Job Performance: 44%, down from 49% in March.
- Majority Feel Worse Off: 55% say their economic situation is getting worse.
Even worse, 71% rated the economy negatively, and a record 55% said Trump’s tariffs are hurting the economy, according to the poll conducted by Beacon Research and Shaw & Company.
“Voters are significantly more concerned about the president disregarding the judiciary than about courts overstepping their authority,” said pollster Chris Anderson.
Fox on the Airwaves: ‘Skeptical’ Voters
The Fox broadcast that appeared to trigger Trump’s fury featured national correspondent Rich Edson, who told America’s Newsroom viewers the public is “skeptical” of Trump’s tariff approach. Co-host Dana Perino and guest Harold Ford Jr. also discussed economic anxiety under Trump.
“While Trump may believe the tariffs are empowering, the reality has been angst and anxiety amongst a lot of small business,” Ford said.
Trump’s rant marked only the second time this term that he’s publicly criticized Fox News — a network he’s often praised for favorable coverage. He previously went after senior White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich, calling her “absolutely terrible.”
Murdoch and Trump: A Fractured Alliance
Rupert Murdoch has historically held a complicated relationship with Trump. Internal messages revealed during the Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit showed Murdoch describing the president as a “fking idiot**.”
Despite their differences, Murdoch met with Trump in February at the White House, raising eyebrows given the mogul’s ongoing public and private criticisms.
The Wall Street Journal editorial board — part of Murdoch’s empire — has consistently criticized Trump’s trade and economic policies, making it another regular target of the president’s ire.
Historical Context: Trump Trails Past Presidents
At the 100-day milestone:
- Biden had a 54% approval rating.
- Obama: 62%.
- George W. Bush: 63%.
- Trump (2025): 44%.
- Trump (2017): 45%.
Fox’s poll also showed 59% of Americans are unhappy with the direction of the country — an improvement from the final Biden days but worse than in 2021 or 2017.
Inflation Still Top Concern, Tariffs Under Fire
The number of Americans extremely or very concerned about inflation remains high at 82%, although down from 89% in January.
Among Republicans, 55% believe tariffs will raise prices — a concern echoed by 76% of independents and 88% of Democrats.
Additionally, two-thirds worry a trade war with China could spiral into military conflict.
Economic Sentiment: Gloom Persists
- Only 28% say things are getting better financially.
- 40% think Trump’s policies will help in the long run; 51% think they will hurt.
- Investors are more supportive of Trump’s economic handling than non-investors.
“Many still see our leaders as unresponsive to their main concerns,” said Republican pollster Daron Shaw.
Fallout Within Trump’s Base
Despite Trump’s grip on the Republican Party, cracks are showing:
- 62% of Americans now say they want Trump to succeed — down from 80% in 2017.
- 89% of 2024 Trump voters still support him — a dip from 97% eight years ago.
- 45% have a favorable opinion of Trump; 55% unfavorable.
Meanwhile, a third of Americans believe divine intervention helped Trump survive two assassination attempts — including 70% of MAGA supporters.
