Deep Look

The United Cup’s high-stakes mixed-team tennis action saw the United States and Kazakhstan secure their places in the semifinals on Wednesday, highlighting a thrilling day of competition across Perth and Sydney.

Gauff and Fritz Dominate for the U.S.

Coco Gauff kicked off the U.S. campaign with a gritty performance, defeating Zhang Shuai 7-6 (4), 6-2. Gauff praised her opponent’s aggressive play, saying, “Shuai was playing amazing tennis. I had to take my chances.”

Taylor Fritz followed up with a clinical 6-4, 6-4 win over Zhang Zhizhen, sealing the U.S. victory. The Americans, who won the tournament two years ago, now move on to face tough competition in the semifinals.

Kazakhstan Upsets Germany

Kazakhstan overcame Germany 2-1 in a dramatic tie. Elena Rybakina’s commanding 6-3, 6-1 win over Laura Siegemund gave Kazakhstan an early lead. Germany’s hopes were dashed when Alexander Zverev, sidelined with a biceps injury, was replaced by Daniel Masur, who fell to Alexander Shevchenko in a grueling match.

Shevchenko overcame heat exhaustion during the match, rallying to win 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2. “It was a struggle in the heat,” he said after the match. Germany later secured a consolation win in the mixed doubles but couldn’t advance.

Poland’s Mixed Doubles Decider

In Sydney, Poland’s Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz secured their quarterfinal berth with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 mixed doubles victory over the Czech Republic. Earlier, Swiatek defeated Karolína Muchová 6-3, 6-4 to level the tie after Hubert Hurkacz’s loss to Tomáš Macháč.

Britain Advances, Australia Falls Short

Katie Boulter led Britain into the quarterfinals with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over Olivia Gadecki. Boulter later admitted she had avoided checking the match scenarios until a dinner chat revealed she needed a straight-sets win to ensure Britain’s progress.

Alex de Minaur kept Australia competitive with a win over Billy Harris and a mixed doubles triumph with Gadecki. However, Australia’s 2-1 victory was not enough to secure advancement.

Italy Tops Group D

Italy continued their strong performance, winning Group D without world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. As former finalists, the Italians are well-positioned for a deep run in the tournament.

What’s Next?

All remaining matches will be played in Sydney, culminating in Sunday’s final. The tournament’s top teams are gearing up for a thrilling conclusion to this high-profile season opener.
