England defeating Senegal 3-0 at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar in the tournament’s fourth match of the round of 16. With the win, England advances to face France in the quarterfinals on Friday. Senegal got some chances early, but never capitalized. That opened the door for England to take control of the match right before halftime with goals from Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane giving it a 2-0 lead at the break. Bukayo Saka added a third goal in the second half to finish off Senegal. The Associated Press has the story:
England to World Cup quarterfinals, beat Senegal 3-0
Kane scored for the 52nd time for his country to move within one of Wayne Rooney’s England record. He also overtook Gary Lineker as his country’s leading scorer in major tournaments with 11 goals.
Jordan Henderson and Bukayo Saka also scored at Al Bayt Stadium while Jude Bellingham played a key role in the opening two goals.

In the first half, late goals from Jordan Henderson in the 39th minute and Harry Kane in stoppage time gave England a 2-0 lead going into halftime. The Senegalese were reeling going into the break. And things didn’t get better when play resumed.
Twelve minutes into the second period, Bukayo Saka made it 3-0 England. It is the third goal of the tournament for the young forward.
Earlier in the day, Les Bleus easily dispatched Poland, 3-1. Kylian Mbappé scored twice for the French to take the lead in the tournament’s Golden Boot race (five goals).
On Friday, Argentina plays the Netherlands in the other quarterfinals match that was set this weekend.
World Cup action resumes tomorrow with more Round of 16 matches. Japan faces Croatia at 10 a.m. ET. Then Brazil plays South Korea at 2 p.m. ET.
England, which reached the semifinals at the last World Cup in Russia, will face defending champion France at Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday.
