The Attorney General of the Laâyoune Court of Appeal in the Moroccan Sahara has initiated a judicial investigation in connection with the death of one individual and injuries sustained by three others. This follows an incident where projectiles were fired at residential areas in the town of Es-Smara.
As part of the inquiry, the Attorney General’s team will undertake technical and ballistic assessments to determine the origin and nature of these projectiles. These projectiles resulted in the death of one and left three injured. Among the injured, two are in a critical state and have been transported to the Laâyoune military hospital for essential medical treatment.
The Attorney General’s office is committed to implementing the suitable legal measures based on the investigation’s findings.
Meanwhile, the Polisario front, backed by Algeria, broke their silence by releasing a statement. However, they did not directly acknowledge their involvement in the said attack. In their press release, issued on Sunday 29th at approximately 7 p.m., the official press agency of the separatists, SPRASD, mentioned that the Polisario defense division conducted operations against the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces’ strongholds in areas like Mahbès, Es Smara, and Farsia. They stated that these operations led to notable human and material losses.
As Moroccan legal bodies delve into the origins and characteristics of the explosions, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to release an official comment. Concurrently, the Polisario’s acknowledgment of their role in the blasts aligns with ongoing UN Security Council deliberations on extending MINURSO forces’ mandate in the region. This has led some to perceive the Polisario’s actions as a hint towards their inclination for armed aggression following their withdrawal from the ceasefire.
