Who is Playing on Thursday?
Defending champion Novak Djokovic will face 63rd-ranked Roberto Carballes Baena in the third match at Court Philippe Chatrier, so it could start at about 4 p.m. (1400 GMT; 10 a.m. EDT). Three days after defeating Rafael Nadal in the first round at Roland Garros, Alexander Zverev will play David Goffin on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Major champions in second-round action include Aryna Sabalenka, Marketa Vondrousova and Daniil Medvedev. Two-time French Open runner-up Casper Ruud, 2017 U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys and Grigor Dimitrov are among the other players on the schedule.
What Happened on Wednesday?
Heavy rain arrived after about 40 minutes of play, wiping out action on all of the outside courts and only allowing competition on the two stadiums with retractable roofs, Chatrier and Lenglen. Current No. 1 Iga Swiatek prevailed in a high-intensity match against former No. 1 Naomi Osaka by a 7-6 (1), 1-6, 7-5 score. Carlos Alcaraz defeated qualifier Jesper De Jong 6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to reach the third round, and Coco Gauff, Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas also moved on. In the day’s final match, which ended after 12:30 a.m. local time, 2015 French Open champion Stan Wawrinka was eliminated by 7-6 (5), 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5) by 56th-ranked Pavel Kotov of Russia. Kotov next faces No. 2 seed Sinner, who won the Australian Open in January.
