Half a year into war in Gaza, here’s a look at conflict by the numbers

The Israel-Hamas war has stretched on for half a year and become one of the most destructive, deadly, and intractable conflicts of the 21st century. Since Hamas’ Oct. 7 cross-border attack, Israel has pummeled the Gaza Strip, displacing the vast majority of the population and causing many to flee to Gaza’s southernmost city, Rafah. Food is scarce, the U.N. says famine is approaching and few Palestinians have been able to leave the besieged territory.

Quick Read

  • Conflict Duration: The Israel-Hamas war has lasted for six months, becoming one of the 21st century’s most severe conflicts.
  • Casualties: The death toll includes 33,137 Palestinians in Gaza, approximately 1,200 people in Israel, 456 Palestinians in the West Bank, and at least 343 individuals in Lebanon.
  • Civilians Affected: In Gaza, women and children constitute about two-thirds of the fatalities. In Israel, 780 civilians and foreigners, along with 62 first responders, were killed on Oct. 7. Lebanon saw at least 50 civilian deaths.
  • Aid and Health Workers: In Gaza, 224 aid workers and 484 health workers have been killed.
  • Soldiers and Militants: Over 13,000 militants have been killed in Gaza by Israel, with additional military casualties reported in Israel and Lebanon.
  • Destruction in Gaza: Over 55.9% of buildings and more than 60% of homes in Gaza are likely damaged or destroyed. All schools and the majority of hospitals are non-operational.
  • Humanitarian Crisis: Over 1.1 million Gazans face severe food insecurity. The entire child population of northern Gaza is out of school, and 31% of children under age 2 are acutely malnourished.
  • Displacement: 1.7 million Palestinians in Gaza and 90,000 Israelis from border communities have been displaced.
  • Hostages and Prisoners: Hamas took 253 hostages on Oct. 7, with 123 freed and 36 confirmed to have died in captivity. Additionally, 240 Palestinian prisoners were released during a pause in the fighting.

Meanwhile, Hamas continues to fire rockets into Israel from Gaza, and Hezbollah and other militant groups do so from southern Lebanon, prompting tit-for-tat fighting that has displaced thousands of civilians on both sides of Israel’s borders. Hamas is still holding hostages taken during the Oct. 7 raid, as well as the bodies of some who died in captivity. And cease-fire talks stretch on with no end in sight.
