Hezbollah Confirms: Leader Hassan Nasrallah Killed by Israeli Strike

Deep Look:

On Saturday, Hezbollah officially confirmed that its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, had been killed in an Israeli airstrike that struck the group’s headquarters in Beirut on Friday. Nasrallah, who had led the militant organization for over three decades, was a key figure in Hezbollah and a prominent player in the broader Middle Eastern geopolitical landscape. Hezbollah’s statement declared that Nasrallah had “joined his fellow martyrs” and vowed to continue the “holy war” against Israel in support of Palestine.

Nasrallah’s death marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which has intensified over the past several weeks. Israeli military spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani confirmed that the airstrike was the culmination of years of tracking Nasrallah and was based on “real-time information” that allowed them to accurately target Hezbollah’s leadership. Shoshani also mentioned that the operation was designed to minimize civilian casualties, although six people were reported dead and 91 were injured in the Beirut strike. Among the dead was Ali Karki, Commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, along with other high-ranking Hezbollah commanders.

The airstrike came after weeks of mounting tensions and nearly a year of cross-border hostilities. Hezbollah, in support of Gaza, began launching rockets at Israel shortly after Hamas initiated a large-scale attack on Israel in early October 2023. Since then, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has gradually escalated, causing displacement on both sides of the border. Over 60,000 Israelis have been evacuated from the northern border, while more than 200,000 Lebanese have fled their homes.

Israel’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, stated that while the elimination of Nasrallah was a significant achievement, it was “not the end” of Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah. He emphasized that further strikes were being planned and that Israel’s goal was to degrade Hezbollah’s military capacity. Although Israel has made significant gains, including the destruction of key missile infrastructure, much of Hezbollah’s arsenal remains intact. Hezbollah’s extensive stockpile of guided missiles and other weaponry continues to pose a threat to Israel, and Israeli officials have warned that Hezbollah may retaliate in the coming days.

The death of Nasrallah has raised questions about the future of Hezbollah. Some analysts believe that his absence could lead to a more aggressive approach from the militant group, as less-experienced commanders might feel pressured to escalate the conflict in response to the loss of their leader. Orna Mizrahi, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, noted that while Nasrallah had often exercised restraint in previous conflicts, his death could prompt Hezbollah to unleash its more powerful weapons. However, she also pointed out that Nasrallah’s death presents an opportunity for Lebanon to potentially weaken Hezbollah’s grip on the country, especially in the southern regions.

Iran, Hezbollah’s primary backer, reacted swiftly to the news of Nasrallah’s death. Iranian state television broadcast Hezbollah’s announcement live, and Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expressed his support for the group, stating that “the resistance movement, headed by Hezbollah, will decide the fate of the region.” He also urged other regional actors to stand by Hezbollah during this critical time. Iran’s parliamentary committee on national security called for a “strong response” to Israel, further fueling concerns about a broader regional conflict.

The airstrike on Nasrallah followed a series of intense military operations by both Israel and Hezbollah. On Saturday, the Israeli military carried out more than 140 airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Beirut and the Bekaa Valley. Among the targets was a storage facility for anti-ship missiles located beneath residential apartment buildings in Dahiyeh, a suburb of Beirut. Hezbollah retaliated by launching dozens of rockets into northern and central Israel, including into the Israel-occupied West Bank, causing damage in some areas.

As tensions continue to rise, the human toll has been severe. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that at least 720 people have been killed in Lebanon from Israeli airstrikes over the past week. The intense bombardment has devastated parts of the country, particularly in the southern suburbs of Beirut and rural areas near the Israeli border. Thousands of families have fled the affected regions, many seeking shelter in public spaces or making their way toward the mountains above the capital. Shelters in central Beirut are overflowing, and displaced residents are living in increasingly dire conditions.

The death of Hassan Nasrallah is likely to mark a pivotal moment in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. As both sides brace for the next phase of hostilities, the international community has expressed concern over the potential for further violence and regional destabilization. However, with Nasrallah gone and Hezbollah leadership under pressure, the long-term implications of this development remain uncertain.
