King Mohammed VI, President of the Al-Quds Committee, has given His Instructions for the dispatch of emergency humanitarian aid to the Palestinian populations, as indicated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates on Monday.
This aid includes significant quantities of foodstuffs, medical supplies, and water, as specified in a statement released by the ministry.
The modalities of sending this emergency aid will be determined in coordination with the Egyptian and Palestinian authorities.
This Royal High Decision is part of the constant commitment of HM King Mohammed VI, to the Palestinian cause, concluded the statement.
Morocco has historically played a role in diplomatic efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, although the extent of its involvement has varied over the years. Here are some key aspects of Morocco’s role:
- Hosting Peace Talks: Morocco has hosted several rounds of peace talks between Israeli and Palestinian representatives. Notably, in the 1990s, Morocco hosted secret negotiations between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) that eventually led to the Oslo Accords in 1993. These talks took place in the Moroccan city of Rabat.
- Support for the Two-State Solution: Morocco has consistently expressed support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. This position aligns with the broader international consensus on resolving the conflict.
- Recognition of Israel: In December 2020, Morocco became one of the few Arab countries to officially recognize Israel and establish diplomatic relations. This move was part of the U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords, which sought to normalize relations between Israel and several Arab states. Morocco’s decision to recognize Israel was seen as a diplomatic milestone in the region.
- Leadership in the Al-Quds Committee: Morocco has been a prominent member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and has taken a leading role in the OIC’s Al-Quds Committee, which focuses on the status of Jerusalem (Al-Quds in Arabic). Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has served as the committee’s president, and the country has advocated for the protection of Palestinian rights in East Jerusalem.
- Humanitarian Aid to Palestine: Morocco has provided humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. This assistance includes financial support, medical aid, and infrastructure development projects.
- Advocacy for Palestinian Rights: Morocco has consistently expressed its support for the rights of Palestinians, including their right to self-determination and an independent state. The country has also condemned Israeli actions in the Palestinian territories, such as settlement expansion and violence against civilians.
Morocco’s role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has evolved over time, reflecting its commitment to a peaceful resolution and its broader diplomatic engagements in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Morocco’s recognition of Israel and its efforts to facilitate dialogue and negotiations contribute to regional stability and the pursuit of a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
