King Mohammed VI’s wisdom leads to victories in the Sahara issue. \ Opinion \ Bill Mikhail \ Newslooks \ Washington \ The numerous developments and peaceful advancements resulting from the policies of His Majesty King Muhammad VI are the most evident and potent proofs of Morocco’s beneficial influence on the diplomacy of North Africa and West Africa. This directly affects the issue of the Moroccan Sahara because Morocco is the sole nation globally concerned about the Sahara, possessing a comprehensive strategy to improve the Moroccan Sahara into a flourishing and prosperous area. Moroccan foreign policy emphasizes a core principle: respecting the internal affairs of all nations, including the perpetual right of the Kingdom on all its territory.

Morocco represents itself in all international forums of which it is a member. Morocco fully reaffirms its right to reintegrate the Sahara into its nation in these forums. Morocco has outlined how the abuses of Polisario aggrieve the Saharan people. Indeed, there is a dynamism surrounding the entire Moroccan Sahara issue. Its mechanism is evident in the growing number of global nations unequivocally recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara as part of the Kingdom of Morocco. Recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara is also evident in actions by President Donald Trump and speeches by various U.S. Congress members.

Proclamation on Recognizing The Sovereignty Of The Kingdom Of Morocco Over The Western Sahara

Observers of changing political landscapes worldwide can attest that the climate is ripe for further endorsements of Morocco’s legitimate rights on the Sahara as part of its territory. Numerous global nations have engaged in serious dialogues with Morocco, soon convinced of Morocco’s absolute right to the Moroccan Sahara. Every nation globally appreciates Morocco’s global roles, leading many to seek close collaboration with Rabat. Morocco refrains from meddling in other countries’ internal affairs. All nations globally are concerned about the Polisario’s threats, which aim to disrupt global peace and destabilize North and West Africa. Thus, supporting Morocco’s rights to the Moroccan Sahara again is the optimal way to counter this extremist and radical group of warlords backed and trained by Algeria.

Polisario’s terrorism is widely recognized, demonstrated by their attempts to cause trouble not only for Morocco but also for other global nations. They have repeatedly attempted to divide the Arab World and the Islamic World over the Moroccan Sahara, yet these attempts have consistently failed. Morocco has had numerous opportunities to exploit challenging situations in many nations, including Algeria itself, but chose not to. Conversely, Algeria and Polisario have often sought to stir trouble within Morocco. Again, they were thwarted by the Moroccan people’s resolve to stand with their King and their Government. The steadfast historical stance of the Moroccan leadership is contributing to a sweeping global political trend whereby more and more nations are again acknowledging Morocco’s sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara.

More nations recognize that Moroccan national interests benefit the future of the region and Africa. People worldwide hold high expectations for Morocco’s contributions to the development of the Sahara. Morocco is committed to vigorously protecting the Sahara from any foreign invasion, tirelessly working to elevate the Sahara to greater welfare and economic growth levels. Morocco has exerted all its efforts to resolve the armed conflict over the Sahara, a conflict that threatens the entire security of Africa and Europe’s southern strategic rim. Morocco’s pledged role significantly reduces tensions between the Saharan people and Mauritania. Morocco has demonstrated all good intentions to end the Sahara conflict.

Every American diplomat visiting Algeria and Morocco has returned to Washington, reporting to the highest levels of the American Government about Morocco’s rightful claim to the Sahara. They returned convinced of the alignment between the U.S. and Moroccan governments regarding the Sahara issue.

Morocco has never experienced border issues with its neighbors, has never pursued an expansionist foreign policy, and has never been hostile toward Algeria, Mauritania, or any other country. Historically, all major powers have respected Morocco’s reputable standing globally. Every nation recognizes Morocco’s peaceful intentions and non-aggressive stance towards the Sahara. Morocco has consistently advocated for a political resolution to the Sahara issue, and the United States has consistently recognized Morocco’s positive approach. They have deemed Morocco’s role constructive. Morocco’s resolve regarding the Sahara is a legitimate historical reality, not a victory of the West over the East. As a founding member of the Non-Alignment Movement, Morocco has influenced many countries not to mediate in the Sahara, aware that Polisario and Algeria incite issues for Morocco. Morocco is poised to create peace, stability, and prosperity for the Saharawi people.

Algeria and its Polisario proxy oppose Morocco’s territorial integrity because they wish to impose their will on this strategically crucial territory. The force of history favors Morocco, which directs the Sahara’s resources toward positive and beneficial outcomes. Additionally, there is no practical solution to the Sahara Question. It is a matter of values, virtues, and principles. A “pragmatic policy” took years to develop and did not yield favorable results for the present or future conditions of the Sahara. These “pragmatic solutions” posited many non-existent premises about the Sahara. In April 2007, Morocco proposed a plan granting autonomy to the Western Saharan people to the United Nations, allowing them to manage their self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty.

Ultimately, Morocco is consistently triumphing in global diplomacy over the Sahara. In 2007, Assistant Secretary of State David Welch strongly supported Morocco’s autonomy plan, calling it “a serious and credible solution.” Regrettably, the Obama Administration distanced itself from Morocco’s favorable plans for the Sahara, a significant diplomatic error. But history continues to side with Morocco.

Increasingly, Morocco is securing diplomatic victories by gaining recognition for its plans for the Sahara. These political acts involve many states acknowledging the Sahara as part of the Kingdom of Morocco. A recent example is Malawi’s reaffirmation of its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity. Secretary of State-Designate Senator Marco Rubio also commended Morocco as a stabilizing force, stating, “I look north to Morocco, where we have seen substantial progress.” This praise for Morocco was echoed by Congressman Joe Wilson in Congress, who accused Polisario of collaborating with the Marxist Kurdistan Workers Party to destabilize Turkey after it had been a disruptive force against Morocco. He stated, “The Terrorist Polisario Front is a threat to the Kingdom of Morocco, an essential U.S. partner.” He added that President Trump supported Morocco by recognizing its sovereignty over the Sahara.

Importantly, President Trump’s second term will solidify the proclamation his Administration issued in December 2020, clearly stating, “The United States affirms, as stated by previous Administrations, its support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute over the Western Sahara territory. Therefore, today, the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. It reaffirms its support for Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a peaceful solution to the dispute over the Western Sahara territory.”

These pro-Moroccan diplomatic declarations are expressions of truth. The idea of Trump making America Great Again aligns with Morocco’s effort to make Africa and the Arab and Islamic Worlds Great Again. The Kingdom of Morocco and the Trump Administration will combine their efforts to resolve the Sahara Question and make it a beneficial region for the entire world.
