Lily Collins Expands ‘Emily in Paris’ to Rome and Barcelona

Deep Look

Lily Collins is taking her on-screen character Emily from Paris to Rome and beyond, as the upcoming episodes of Emily in Paris expand the character’s adventures to new cities. In part two of Season 4, set to release soon on Netflix, Emily finds herself navigating the streets of Rome in her signature dramatic fashion, temporarily leaving behind the bustling life of the French capital. As the star and producer of the show, Collins was thrilled to explore Italy with her character, alongside co-stars Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Lucas Bravo, Ashley Park, and Camille Razat. The cast premiered the new episodes in Rome earlier this week, giving fans a sneak peek into what’s to come.

For fans wondering if the show’s title might change with Emily’s travels, Emily in Paris creator Darren Star confirms that the name will stay the same, despite the character’s expanding adventures. “No, it’s ‘Emily in Paris,’” Star said, emphasizing that while Emily may explore new cities like Rome, the essence of the show remains rooted in her Parisian experiences. He also hinted that there may be more travels for Emily in future seasons, though Paris will continue to be the show’s base.

Collins, who has grown into the role over the course of four seasons, shared how excited she was to film in Rome, a city she had never fully explored. “I’d been to Rome but never fully explored or been here for a long period of time. So it was a whole new adventure,” Collins revealed. The iconic Italian capital provided a new backdrop for Emily’s journey, and filming around landmarks like the Colosseum added a sense of surrealism to the experience for both the actor and her character.

In a recent interview in Rome, Collins reflected on how filming in such public, high-profile locations, with fans often watching from the sidelines, gave her valuable experience for an entirely different project—her upcoming West End theater debut in Barcelona. The stage thriller, in which Collins stars alongside Money Heist actor Álvaro Morte, will debut in October. For Collins, the experience of performing in front of onlookers during Emily in Paris filming felt like a preview of performing live theater. “It did give me a bit more confidence, an understanding of performing in front of a large crowd this year,” she explained.

Filming in public often feels like a live theater experience, according to Collins, with crowds gathering to watch and often snapping photos. She humorously recalled moments where she and her co-stars, riding Vespas around Rome for certain scenes, were met with intrigued looks from tourists. “Tourists, of course, are noticing that there’s this massive machine and then a car with a Vespa attached to it. And then we are going on an actual Vespa,” Collins laughed. “But then once they figured out it was our show, it was fun.”

As someone who grew up admiring Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn, Collins was particularly excited to channel elements of Hepburn’s 1953 film Roman Holiday in the Rome scenes of Emily in Paris. Fans of the show can look forward to visual nods to Hepburn, especially in scenes reminiscent of classic films like Roman Holiday and Charade. “If you’re here, how can you not [channel Hepburn]?” Collins said, referring to filming in such an iconic city.

Along with her flourishing TV career, Collins’ upcoming venture into theater is a major step forward in her artistic journey. Although she’s nervous about stepping onto the stage, Collins has long dreamed of performing live. “I’m very excited. But of course, I’m also nervous. It’s a whole new world for me,” she admitted. Having dabbled in theater as a child, Collins said returning to the stage now feels both surreal and fulfilling. “Doing theater is something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. “When I read Barcelona, I went, ‘This is it.'”

Juggling the demands of a TV series like Emily in Paris while preparing for a major stage role has required careful planning. However, Collins says the challenge is part of what drew her to theater. “It’s a different medium, a different skill set, a different experience,” she noted.

As Collins prepares for her West End debut, fans of Emily in Paris can look forward to seeing her character explore new cities while remaining the Emily they’ve grown to love. The possibility of Emily’s travels extending to more European cities in future seasons is something Collins herself hopes to see. “There’s so much here to explore,” she said about Italy, hinting that Emily’s adventures might continue across other parts of Europe.

From the streets of Paris to the historic alleys of Rome, and soon, the stages of London, Lily Collins is embracing her journey—both on-screen and off—with the same charm and poise that have defined her career thus far.
