Deep Look

Liverpool surged to the top of the Premier League table with a commanding 3-0 victory over Bournemouth, courtesy of a quickfire double from Luis Díaz. Díaz was the star of the show at Anfield, scoring twice within two minutes to cement Liverpool’s place at the summit, ahead of Manchester City on goal difference. Díaz’s performance stood out, particularly on a day when Liverpool’s usual talisman, Mohamed Salah, had a quiet game in front of goal.

The first goal, which came in the 28th minute, was a masterclass in control and composure. A long ball from Ibrahima Konaté sent Díaz chasing towards the Bournemouth goal. With expert control, he cushioned the ball on his waist as he turned and deftly navigated past Bournemouth goalkeeper Kepa before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom left corner. That goal, finished with his right foot, showcased his technical brilliance and calm under pressure.

Only two minutes later, Díaz doubled his tally. This time, Trent Alexander-Arnold surged forward from midfield and delivered a precise pass to Díaz inside the left side of the penalty area. With a swift left-footed finish, Díaz clipped the ball past Kepa, leaving the keeper helpless for the second time. His two goals, one from each foot, were the highlight of an otherwise comfortable afternoon for the Reds.

Darwin Núñez completed the scoring in the 37th minute, adding Liverpool’s third. Collecting the ball wide on the right, Núñez appeared to be setting up for a cross, but instead, he shifted his body and unleashed a curling shot that struck the inside of the left post and found the back of the net. With that goal, Liverpool cruised into halftime with a three-goal cushion and held on to secure a dominant win, even as Bournemouth offered little in response during the second half.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United missed the chance to go top of the Premier League after a 3-1 defeat to Fulham. Raúl Jiménez opened the scoring for Fulham with a well-placed shot into the bottom corner, but it was a goalkeeping error from Newcastle’s Nick Pope that allowed Emile Smith Rowe to extend Fulham’s lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute. Although Harvey Barnes managed to pull one back for Newcastle after halftime, a late goal from Reiss Nelson in stoppage time sealed a 3-1 win for Fulham, dropping Newcastle to sixth place.

Aston Villa continued their excellent run of form, coming from behind to defeat Wolverhampton 3-1 in a dramatic Midlands derby. Diego Carlos’s misplaced pass allowed Matheus Cunha to score the opener for Wolves, but Ollie Watkins, who has been in blistering form, equalized for Villa in the 73rd minute with a deflected shot, marking his fourth goal in three matches. Ezri Konsa put Villa ahead in the 88th minute, converting a cross from Youri Tielemans, and super-sub Jhon Duran capped the win with a stoppage-time goal, marking his fourth strike off the bench this season. The match featured nearly 15 minutes of stoppage time after Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera was stretchered off due to injury. Villa’s win lifted them to third place, level on points with Manchester City but trailing on goal difference.

Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson celebrated his 50th club appearance in style, scoring twice and providing an assist in their 3-0 win over West Ham. Jackson was in fine form, combining with Jadon Sancho early in the game to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. He added his second in the 18th minute, latching onto a through ball from Moises Caicedo and driving a low shot into the bottom corner. Jackson then turned provider in the 47th minute, setting up Cole Palmer, who added Chelsea’s third. West Ham fans expressed their frustration, booing the team off the pitch as new coach Julen Lopetegui remains under pressure after a poor start to the season.

Tottenham Hotspur also enjoyed success, rallying to beat Brentford 3-1. Brentford’s Bryan Mbuemo stunned the Spurs defense with a first-minute goal, but Dominic Solanke responded quickly, leveling the match in the 8th minute after James Maddison’s initial shot was saved. Brennan Johnson gave Tottenham the lead in the 28th minute after a smart assist from Son Heung-Min, who later set up Maddison’s late goal to secure the win.

Meanwhile, Manchester United endured a frustrating 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace, squandering several key chances. United dominated the first half, with Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes both hitting the crossbar, but they were unable to find a breakthrough. The result left United in 11th place, while Palace sits in 16th.

In other action, Southampton’s winless streak continued as they were denied victory by a last-gasp goal from Ipswich. Veteran midfielder Adam Lallana assisted 18-year-old Tyler Dibling to give Southampton an early lead, but a dramatic 95th-minute equalizer from Ipswich captain Sam Morsy, who fired a 20-meter strike past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, left Southampton stuck in 18th place.

Everton also dropped points, drawing 1-1 with Leicester in a rain-delayed match. Iliman Ndiaye scored for Everton in the 12th minute, but Leicester’s Stephy Mavididi equalized in the 73rd, leaving Everton in 19th spot.
