Morocco has achieved a significant milestone by being elected as the President of the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2024. The election took place in Geneva, where Morocco received 30 out of 47 votes from the council members, surpassing South Africa’s 17 votes. This event marks Morocco’s first time leading this esteemed UN body, signifying international recognition of the progressive vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in the realm of human rights protection and promotion.
Morocco’s Historic Election to UN Human Rights Council Presidency
Under the King’s guidance, Morocco has committed to upholding the rule of law and human rights, a commitment that is deeply embedded in its 2011 Constitution. This commitment has spurred ongoing reforms aimed at bolstering democracy, gender equality, social and territorial justice, human rights effectiveness, inclusive participation, and youth empowerment.a
The Kingdom’s election, supported by a diverse range of countries despite opposition from Algeria and South Africa, highlights the trust and credibility Morocco has earned through its foreign actions, especially under Royal leadership in Africa, globally, and within the multilateral system.
Morocco, a significant contributor to the Human Rights Council, is recognized for its role in foundational processes of the organization. The international community’s trust in Morocco is seen as an endorsement of its constructive approach and unifying leadership on critical issues such as interfaith dialogue, tolerance, combating racial hatred, environmental rights, migrants’ rights, and the impact of new technologies.
During its presidency, Morocco pledges to maintain its established approach of fostering dialogue and consensus within the Human Rights Council. The Kingdom aims to actively collaborate with council members and regional groups to further strengthen and advance this crucial segment of the UN human rights system.
