The tragedy occurred at 3:15 a.m. in the French Quarter, a hub for New Year’s celebrations and pre-Sugar Bowl festivities, leaving the city reeling.

The Incident

The suspect drove a vehicle at high speed into a crowd of pedestrians along Bourbon Street, one of the busiest and most iconic destinations for New Year’s Eve parties. The attack came hours before the Sugar Bowl at the Superdome, further swelling the city’s already massive crowds.

Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick described the act as deliberate, saying, “He was hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did.”

After the crash, the suspect engaged in a firefight with police. Two officers were injured but are in stable condition. The suspect was fatally shot during the exchange. Law enforcement officials, speaking anonymously, confirmed the death to the Associated Press.

Explosive Devices Found

Investigators discovered at least one suspected improvised explosive device (IED) at the scene, heightening concerns over the suspect’s intent. Alethea Duncan, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans field office, stated that while IEDs were recovered, the agency does not currently classify the incident as a terrorist attack.
