Deep Look

A harrowing plot to harm Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro unfolded early Sunday morning when a suspect scaled security fencing, broke into the governor’s mansion, and set a fire that caused significant damage to the residence. According to court documents released Monday, the suspect—Cody Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg—told investigators he planned to assault the governor with a sledgehammer if he encountered him.

The incident took place in the early hours of April 14, during a Passover celebration hosted by the Shapiro family at their official residence in Harrisburg. At around 2 a.m., Pennsylvania State Police knocked on the door to evacuate the governor, his wife, four children, two dogs, and visiting family members. The fire was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported.

Intent to Harm Governor

In an interview following his arrest, Balmer admitted he “harbored hatred” toward Shapiro, though the documents did not elaborate on his motive. Balmer told police he walked for an hour from his home to the residence, carrying Molotov cocktails constructed from beer bottles filled with gasoline.

He intended to attack Shapiro with a small sledgehammer, according to an affidavit. Authorities noted that Balmer remained inside the residence for less than a minute before fleeing the scene.

Charges and Criminal History

Balmer has been charged with attempted homicide, terrorism, aggravated arson, aggravated assault, and other serious felonies. He is currently being held in Dauphin County Prison. Online records reveal a history of criminal charges, including simple assault, theft, and forgery, dating back more than a decade.

Authorities have not confirmed whether Balmer has obtained legal representation. Attempts to reach potential relatives were unsuccessful, and one known residence listed for him had been condemned in 2022.

A Governor Unshaken

At a press conference held later Sunday outside the charred south wing of the mansion, Gov. Shapiro remained defiant. He told reporters that the attack would not deter him from performing his duties or observing his Jewish faith.

“If the goal was to stop me from doing my job, I’m going to work even harder,” Shapiro said. “I refuse to be trapped by the bondage that someone attempts to put on me by attacking us as they did.”

He reflected on the significance of celebrating Passover, a holiday that honors the Jewish exodus from slavery to freedom. The symbolic contrast of the holiday’s meaning and the attack wasn’t lost on him.

“We told the story of freedom—and I will not be held back by hate.”

Scene of the Crime

According to Pennsylvania State Police, Balmer hopped a 7-foot-high iron security fence, bypassed initial detection, and forced his way into the mansion. The fire was ignited using Molotov cocktails, with significant damage sustained to one of the home’s most prominent rooms.

That large entertaining space, often used for official functions and art exhibits, was left blackened and gutted. Windows were shattered, doors blown ajar, and the smell of smoke lingered into Sunday afternoon. Inside, observers could see charred furniture, burned artwork, melted serving dishes, and a scorched grand piano.

The south and west-facing windows were completely blown out, with glass and debris scattered across surrounding walkways. Security personnel, including K-9 units, remained stationed at the residence throughout the day.

Public and Political Response

Authorities have not yet determined a motive, though Shapiro condemned the broader trend of escalating political violence.

“We don’t yet know this individual’s specific motivation,” he said. “But this violence is becoming far too common in our society. I don’t care what party it’s directed at or who it targets—this is not acceptable.”

He added, “We have to be better than this.”

The arson attack and its political implications are likely to intensify scrutiny on the safety of elected officials, especially amid growing national concerns over extremism and violence.

Shapiro, a rising Democratic figure, is widely considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate, and the attack may lead to increased security protocols at executive residences nationwide.
