Authorities in Pennsylvania are looking for a gunman they say shot and killed a police officer and wounded another during a foot pursuit near Pittsburgh on Sunday.
The shootings happened in separate incidents just blocks apart in Brackenridge, an Allegheny County town northeast of Pittsburgh. The gunman carjacked a vehicle after the shootings Sunday afternoon and is considered “extremely dangerous,” assistant police Superintendent Victor Joseph told a news briefing reported by WTAE-TV.
Police Chief Justin McIntire was fatally shot in Brackenridge, Allegheny County on Monday evening, according to Pennsylvania Governor-elect Josh Shapiro.
According to police officials in Allegheny County, 28-year-old Aaron Lamont Swan Jr. of Duquesne was involved in multiple chases with police over two days due to a probation violation for weapons.
Police say on Monday there was a traffic stop where officers identified Swan Jr. and that he was able to elude officers.
Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies were looking for a suspect identified as Aaron Lamont Swan, 28, of the nearby city of Duquesne. Police spokesman Christopher Kearns told reporters that Swan had been sought for a parole violation involving a weapons charge. Authorities said they were looking for Aaron Lamont Swan, 28, of Duquesne, in connection to the shooting, Allegheny County Police Superintendent, Christopher Kearns, told reporters. The officers’ identities weren’t immediately released. The slain officer was shot in the head, Kearns said. The second officer was wounded in the leg and was expected to survive, he said.
At 2 p.m., officers found Swan, who was wanted for a probation violation, and chased him on foot. At 4:15 p.m., a Brackenridge police officer saw Swan in the 800 block of Third Street and another foot chase ensued, Kearns said.
The two shootings occurred a few blocks apart during the chase and two officers were wounded. McIntire was struck in the head. The second officer was hospitalized in stable condition.
Following the shootings, Swan allegedly carjacked a vehicle. Details about the shooting that killed him have not been disclosed.
