Deep Look

RockyFest 2023: A Love Letter to a Philly Legend

Nearly five decades after Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky premiered and captured the hearts of millions, Philadelphia is finally giving its most famous underdog a weeklong celebration worthy of his legacy. RockyFest 2023, running from Dec. 3 to Dec. 8, builds on the success of last year’s inaugural Rocky Day, transforming it into an expanded festival filled with events that honor the beloved boxing hero and the city he called home.

The celebration kicked off on Dec. 3, marking the 47th anniversary of the original film’s release. In true Rocky style, local elementary school students sprinted up the famous 72 steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, recreating one of cinema’s most iconic moments.

A Packed Schedule of Rocky-Themed Events

RockyFest offers a variety of activities that cater to fans of all ages, including:

  • Rocky Bus Tour: Fans can visit famous filming locations such as the Italian Market, the exterior of Mighty Mick’s Gym, and the fictional gravesites of Adrian and Paulie. The tour also stops near the real grave of Phillies announcer Harry Kalas, blending fiction and reality.
  • Mural Unveiling: A new mural celebrates the cultural impact of Rocky in Philadelphia, adding to the city’s already vibrant street art scene.
  • Movie Marathons: Screenings of the Rocky and Creed series allow fans to relive the saga of the underdog boxer.
  • RockyU Discussions: Panels dive into the enduring appeal of Sylvester Stallone’s iconic character and explore Rocky’s influence on popular culture.
  • Look-Alike Contests: Fans dress as Rocky, Adrian, or other beloved characters for a chance to win prizes.
  • Ice Skating Tribute: Fans can recreate Rocky and Adrian’s first date at a local ice rink.

Visitors are encouraged to embrace their inner “Italian Stallion” by running the museum steps, taking photos with the Rocky statue, or picking up Rocky-themed memorabilia, such as Clubber Lang plush dolls and “Italian Stallion” robes.

Philadelphia and Rocky: A Symbiotic Relationship

Rocky has become as central to Philadelphia’s identity as the Liberty Bell or Independence Hall. The character’s journey from underdog to champion mirrors the city’s own scrappy resilience. The Rocky statue at the base of the museum steps is one of Philadelphia’s most visited landmarks, with tourists lining up daily to capture the moment on camera.

“Rocky is part of the fabric of Philadelphia,” said Maita Soukup, a representative of the Philadelphia Visitors Center. “Tourists come from all over the world to visit the statue, but until recently, there wasn’t anything official to welcome them. RockyFest and the visitor’s center aim to change that.”

Indeed, the festival not only celebrates the movies but also connects fans with the city itself. By showcasing filming locations like the Italian Market and Mick’s Gym, RockyFest gives visitors a deeper understanding of the character’s roots in Philadelphia’s neighborhoods.

The Legacy of Rocky Balboa

Since its 1976 release, the original Rocky has become a cultural phenomenon, earning a Best Picture Oscar and inspiring eight sequels, including three Creed films. In 2020, it tied for second place in The Associated Press’ Top 25 favorite sports movies poll.

Sylvester Stallone, who wrote and starred in the original film, credits much of the character’s success to Philadelphia. At last year’s Rocky Day, Stallone praised the city for its role in shaping the film’s legacy.

“For some reason, these 72 steps inspire me, excite me,” Stallone said. “You get to the top, and you feel special, hopeful, happy, and proud. To all of you who live your life on your own terms, you just keep punching.”

From Raw Eggs to the Festival Stage

Die-hard fans have long embraced Rocky’s spirit of determination and grit. Some begin their day with a tribute run up the museum steps or participate in the grueling 50-kilometer Rocky Run, retracing the character’s cinematic training route.

Rocky’s influence extends beyond sports. The series’ themes of perseverance, humility, and hope resonate across generations, making the films timeless classics.

The Birth of RockyFest

The idea for RockyFest originated with the Philadelphia Visitors Center, which wanted to create a more robust experience for the droves of tourists visiting the statue. Stallone himself reached out to support the initiative, partnering with the center to develop the event.

“If the first festival is successful, expect RockyFest II, III, IV, and more,” joked Soukup, referencing the film series’ sequels.

What’s Next for RockyFest?

As RockyFest 2023 unfolds, it sets the stage for what could become an annual tradition. By celebrating the character’s impact on Philadelphia and its people, the festival ensures that Rocky Balboa’s legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come.

Just like the fighter himself, the festival is ready to “go the distance.”
