Deep Look

British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been officially charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault, marking a dramatic development in a case that has drawn national and international scrutiny. London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed Friday that Brand, 50, faces five charges involving four women, stemming from alleged incidents that occurred between 1999 and 2005 in both central London and Bournemouth.

The specific charges include one count of rape, one of oral rape, one of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault. These charges follow an 18-month police investigation launched after a joint exposé by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times in September 2023. The investigative reports featured the testimonies of four women who accused Brand of sexual violence. None of the accusers have been publicly identified.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, the Metropolitan Police noted that the investigation remains active and urged anyone with further information to come forward. Brand is scheduled to appear in a London court on May 2.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which is responsible for bringing criminal cases in England and Wales, confirmed its decision to charge Brand after a careful review of the evidence submitted by police.

Jaswant Narwal, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS, stated, “We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault. Criminal proceedings are now active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial.”

Brand, known for his provocative comedic style and flamboyant public persona, rose to fame in the 2000s. He hosted a number of TV and radio shows, wrote bestselling memoirs detailing his battles with addiction, and acted in Hollywood films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. From 2010 to 2012, he was married to pop star Katy Perry.

In recent years, Brand shifted his focus away from traditional entertainment. He built a significant online following through platforms like YouTube, where he shares videos combining wellness tips, anti-establishment views, and conspiracy theories. He has since stated that he moved to the United States.

Brand has denied all the allegations, saying that all of his past relationships were “always consensual.” Following the 2023 reports, he released a video stating that he “absolutely refutes” the claims and suggested the accusations were part of a coordinated media attack.

The fallout from the accusations has been far-reaching. In January 2025, the BBC—where Brand hosted radio programs between 2006 and 2008—issued an apology to former staff members. The broadcaster admitted that some employees may have felt unable to speak out about inappropriate behavior due to Brand’s celebrity status.

A BBC spokesperson acknowledged, “It is clear that presenters have been able to abuse their positions in the past.”

The investigation into Brand is part of a broader reckoning within the British media and entertainment industries, as multiple organizations reassess their historical handling of misconduct allegations involving high-profile figures.

As the legal process begins, the case is expected to draw intense media attention. Authorities have reminded the public that Brand is entitled to a presumption of innocence and a fair trial.
