Senate Panel Advances Kash Patel’s FBI Nomination Amid Partisan Debate/ Newslooks/ WASHINGTON/ J. Mansour/ Morning Edition/ The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 12-10 along party lines to advance Kash Patel’s nomination as FBI director, sending it to the full Senate for confirmation. Democrats warn Patel could politicize the agency, citing his loyalty to Trump, past controversial statements, and lack of leadership experience. However, Republicans argue he is the right choice to reform the FBI, which they claim has been tainted by political bias. Patel’s confirmation vote is expected soon, following Trump’s successful appointments of Pete Hegseth and Tulsi Gabbard.

Deep Look: Senate Panel Advances Kash Patel’s FBI Nomination

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to advance Kash Patel’s nomination as FBI director, moving it to the full Senate despite strong Democratic opposition.

The 12-10 party-line vote reflects the deep divide over Patel, a former Trump administration official known for his loyalty to the former president and sharp criticism of the FBI.

“This is a guy whose judgment is beyond questionable. It’s appallingly bad,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I.

Democrats Warn of FBI Politicization Under Patel

Democrats raised concerns over Patel’s past statements, particularly:

  • Calling Trump-related FBI investigators “government gangsters.”
  • Labeling some Jan. 6 defendants “political prisoners.”
  • Proposing to turn FBI headquarters into a “deep state museum.”

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the committee’s ranking Democrat, warned Patel’s appointment could undermine the agency’s credibility at a time of rising national security threats from China and international terrorism.

“We are inviting a political disaster if we put Kash Patel into this job,” Durbin cautioned.

Durbin also cited reports suggesting Patel was secretly involved in the recent forced removals of FBI senior officials, despite denying any role during his confirmation hearing.

Republicans Back Patel as FBI Reform Candidate

Republicans dismissed Democratic concerns, arguing the FBI needs new leadership to restore public trust after what they call years of political bias.

“The American people are sick and tired of two tiers of justice,” said Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.

Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., defended Patel’s nontraditional background, saying:

“He might not have served in the FBI’s upper echelons, but don’t we want a fresh perspective?”
