Deep Look: Trump Hosts Thousands at 2025 White House Easter Egg Roll

WASHINGTON (AP)The South Lawn of the White House is once again buzzing with laughter and celebration as President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump host the 2025 Easter Egg Roll — their first of the second term. A crowd of 40,000 is expected to participate in the event that has long marked springtime in the nation’s capital.

Scheduled for Monday, the daylong event offers families and children the chance to enjoy a host of festive activities — though the possibility of scattered showers looms over the forecast. The president and first lady were set to deliver remarks from the White House balcony before joining guests on the lawn.

The iconic egg rolling contest will once again take center stage, with children using spoons to roll brightly colored, hard-boiled eggs across the grass toward a finish line. Alongside the rolling races, there will be egg hunts and interactive experiences that tie into the upcoming celebration of America’s 250th birthday in 2026.

The U.S. semiquincentennial will be celebrated on July 4, 2026, and Monday’s event gives families a chance to get in the spirit early. Activities include opportunities for children to sign a miniature Declaration of Independence or dress up as key figures from the nation’s founding.

High-Profile Story Time Readers

This year’s readers include First Lady Melania Trump, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and Keith Kellogg, President Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine. Their participation in reading sessions is part of a broader push to make the day educational as well as entertaining.

Live music, puppet shows, and multiple themed activity stations will keep visitors engaged throughout the day.

American Egg Board Donates 30,000 Eggs

Central to the event, of course, are the eggs — and plenty of them. Emily Metz, President and CEO of the American Egg Board, confirmed the organization delivered 30,000 hand-dyed eggs to the White House on Friday. Volunteers and board members prepared the eggs over recent weeks.

The American Egg Board, which has been a part of the Easter Egg Roll tradition for nearly 50 years and has served as a key sponsor for over a decade, has continued its involvement despite broader challenges facing the egg industry.

Metz acknowledged the ongoing frustration over high egg prices and recent shortages caused by avian flu outbreaks but explained that the eggs donated to the White House were of smaller, non-retail sizes—meaning their use wouldn’t affect consumer supply or prices. In total, nearly 9 million dozen eggs are sold each day in the U.S.

“We feel like we need to take a moment to celebrate where we can,” Metz said in an interview. “And you cannot have Easter without eggs, and you cannot have the White House Easter Egg Roll without real eggs.”

Rain or Shine Tradition

Though weather reports indicate the possibility of light rain, the White House has not altered its plans. The Easter Egg Roll is primarily held outdoors, and while scattered showers could affect comfort, the spirit of the event is expected to remain strong.

A Tradition Dating Back to 1878

The White House Easter Egg Roll is one of the most time-honored events on the presidential calendar, dating back to 1878 under President Rutherford B. Hayes. That year, after children were banned from rolling eggs on Capitol Hill, Hayes opened the White House lawn to the public, creating a new tradition that has spanned generations.

Participation in the 2025 event was secured via a public lottery, which thousands entered for a chance to experience the event firsthand.

As families enjoy games, egg hunts, and patriotic-themed activities on the South Lawn, the event not only celebrates Easter but also offers a chance to reflect on the nation’s enduring traditions — and the joy of springtime at the White House.
