Deep Look:

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are both holding significant events Thursday aimed at boosting support among their key voter bases ahead of the 2024 presidential election. As the race heats up, both candidates are employing different strategies to engage their supporters in the final stretch before Election Day.

Kamala Harris will team up with media icon Oprah Winfrey for a two-hour livestream event in Michigan titled “Unite for America.” Scheduled for 8 p.m. EDT, the event will focus on rallying Democratic supporters, highlighting grassroots organizations that back the vice president’s campaign. Winfrey, who endorsed Harris during the Democratic National Convention in August, will moderate the event. Organizers aim to energize the base by featuring various grassroots groups that are advocating for Democratic causes and working to drive voter turnout.

While Harris reaches out to Democratic supporters through digital means, Donald Trump will be addressing a live audience in Washington, D.C. at an event aimed at combatting anti-Semitism. The “Fighting Anti-Semitism in America” event is set to take place later Thursday evening, featuring prominent Jewish donors, including Miriam Adelson, widow of Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino magnate and one of the Republican Party’s largest donors. Miriam Adelson is also the co-owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. Trump’s appearance at this event underlines his long-standing relationship with the Jewish community and his staunch support for Israel.

Trump’s Thursday itinerary will also include a speech at the Israeli-American Council, a nonprofit organization with a deep history of support from major political donors, such as Sheldon Adelson on the Republican side, and Haim Saban, a well-known donor to Democratic causes, including President Joe Biden. The council’s national convention is taking place just weeks before the anniversary of Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, which triggered the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

In addition to Thursday’s activities, both candidates have busy schedules planned for the following days. Harris will continue her campaign tour with stops in key battleground states, Wisconsin and Georgia, on Friday. She is expected to emphasize a tragic case involving a young woman named Amber Thurman, whose death after complications from an abortion pill is being cited by Harris as a direct consequence of Trump’s influence on the Supreme Court. The case has garnered attention after being reported by ProPublica and is being used by Harris to highlight the effects of Georgia’s stringent abortion laws enacted after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. Trump had nominated three of the justices responsible for the decision that paved the way for these bans.

Meanwhile, Trump will turn his attention to North Carolina, where he is slated to hold a rally on Saturday, continuing his efforts to solidify support in battleground states that will be critical to his 2024 campaign.

These events also come in the wake of the Federal Reserve’s decision to cut its benchmark interest rate by a significant half-point. The cut marks a shift after more than two years of high rates aimed at controlling inflation. The decision has potential political implications, with just weeks to go before the election. Campaigning in New York, Trump was quick to criticize the move, suggesting that the economy must be in worse shape than it seems for the Fed to make such a dramatic cut.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded to questions about whether the rate cut was politically motivated, asserting that the Biden administration has always respected the independence of the Federal Reserve. Jean-Pierre also took a subtle dig at Trump’s previous criticisms of the central bank during his presidency, without directly mentioning his name.

As both campaigns intensify their efforts, these events reflect the candidates’ differing approaches. While Harris focuses on mobilizing grassroots supporters with the help of Oprah Winfrey, Trump is reinforcing his strong support among Jewish Americans and his stance on Israel, hoping to energize voters ahead of November.
