Deep Look: Letitia James Faces Mortgage Fraud Allegations from Trump Administration

New York Attorney General Letitia James, a central figure in civil and criminal legal actions against former President Donald Trump, is now under federal scrutiny herself. The Trump administration has referred James to the U.S. Department of Justice over claims of mortgage fraud, in a dramatic twist that may upend the political and legal landscape in 2025.

According to exclusive documentation obtained by Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) submitted a criminal referral accusing James of falsifying critical information on mortgage applications. FHFA Director William Pulte outlined the allegations in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, stating that James may have deliberately misrepresented key details to secure favorable home loan terms.

In response, a spokesperson for James’ office said Wednesday morning that she has been

“focused every single day on protecting New Yorkers, especially as this administration weaponizes the federal government against the rule of law and the Constitution. She will not be intimidated by bullies — no matter who they are.”

Misleading Mortgage Claims

The crux of the allegations involves a property in Virginia that James reportedly listed as her primary residence, despite her elected position in New York—which legally mandates residency in that state. This could potentially violate eligibility rules for certain mortgage terms. Moreover, another New York property was allegedly described as a four-unit building rather than a five-unit property, a detail that may have allowed her to benefit from more lenient lending criteria.

Additionally, the accusations extend to her identification of familial relationships. James is alleged to have listed her father as her husband on mortgage documents dating back to 1983 and 2000. Legal analysts say such misrepresentation, if proven deliberate, could be considered fraudulent.

Retired NYPD inspector and Fox News contributor Paul Mauro, who first reported on the documents nearly 10 weeks prior on his Substack, affirmed the authenticity of the evidence, citing research conducted by whistleblower Sam Antar.

The Alleged Misrepresentations

At the center of the referral is a property in Virginia, which James allegedly claimed as her primary residence, a detail that would have allowed her access to better mortgage rates. This claim is particularly controversial given James’ elected position in New York, which legally requires her to declare her principal residence within the state.

Additionally, another property in New York was reportedly listed by James as a four-unit building instead of a five-unit one. The number of units in a property can directly impact the terms of a mortgage, including the interest rate, lending requirements, and qualification status.

Legal experts argue that if the allegations are accurate, they reflect a pattern of deliberate deception. Particularly eyebrow-raising are accusations that James listed her father as her husband on mortgage applications in 1983 and 2000.
