Donald Trump accepted an important endorsement from the Fraternal Order of Police on Friday, using the opportunity to denounce the U.S. legal system, which has convicted him of multiple felonies. The event also served as a platform for Trump to celebrate the postponement of his sentencing in a New York case. Speaking at the police union’s convention in North Carolina, a key battleground state, Trump sought to position himself as a law-and-order candidate, contrasting himself with his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. However, his speech shifted to the legal challenges he faces, as Trump attacked the judiciary and repeated his false claims of voter fraud.

“Big news today is the Manhattan D.A. witch hunt against me has been postponed because everyone realizes that there was no case — because I did nothing wrong,” Trump declared. The Fraternal Order of Police, one of the nation’s most influential law enforcement organizations, endorsed Trump, with its president, Patrick Yoes, praising Trump’s support for police during the nationwide protests in 2020 following George Floyd’s murder.

In his speech, Trump took aim at Harris, claiming that Democrats have allowed crime to flourish. “Kamala Harris and the communist left have unleashed a brutal plague of bloodshed, crime, chaos, misery, and death upon their land,” he said, adding that police are “not allowed to do your jobs.” Trump also encouraged police to monitor voter fraud in the upcoming election, despite no evidence of widespread voter fraud in past elections. “Watch for voter fraud. You can keep it down just by watching. Believe it or not, they’re afraid of that badge,” Trump told the audience.

Harris has leaned into her past as a prosecutor, stating she understands Trump’s tactics well. Two Capitol police officers have become surrogates for Harris, criticizing Trump for endangering law enforcement during the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

Trump’s speech comes as he faces multiple legal challenges, including convictions on felony counts and ongoing investigations. Despite his legal troubles, the former president continues to receive backing from law enforcement groups like the Fraternal Order of Police, along with others, including the National Association of Police Organizations. In Charlotte, Trump reiterated his support for pardoning those convicted of crimes related to the January 6 Capitol riot, despite law enforcement officers describing the brutal attacks they endured on that day. As Trump pushes forward with his presidential campaign, his legal battles remain a focal point, and his rhetoric around voter fraud and law enforcement continues to draw both support and criticism.
